Don’t get me wrong, I adulation Keanu Reeves! I will watch him in just about anything, but this blur is absolutely awful! The Software was ridiculous! Even as an alien, Keanu,

A Top-Down Overview (without major spoilers)

Firstly, the negatives! The film, I felt, lacked a more clear resolution as to the future of humanity under the eye of the alien races. Somewhat not enough attention was given to developing of the greater picture, especially given the global message which the film carries. The film is not really character driven, but action driven. Consequently, the socio-political plot, which can serve as reinforcement in such scenarios, are weak if not missing.

Another forefront problem, no less significant, is Jaden Smith who, putting is bluntly, needs to work on his acting.
Secondly, the positives, topping of the list of which, is the brilliant storyline. This film is adapted from a 1951 classic, and a good portion of credit here has got to go to the original; although, the rewrite is definitely attention-worthy. The topic is very timely, and possibly even more representative of the dangers, which the human civilization has cooked up for itself. The director does a very good job of creating a sense of imminent danger, all the more because the film exposes not only the physical threat to the human existence but the underlying egocentrism and self-adulation, in which the Western civilization is saturated.
Furthermore, from the purely sci-fi perspective, the ultra-advanced technology of the aliens is well imagined and in match with the sort of advancements one would have to possess to freely travel about the galaxy. The film creates a powerful, intense image of the technological chasm which exists between earth and the extra-terrestrials. In this sense, the film is true science-fiction. Movies Download site
Having read some of the negative reviews of the film, the central message which the film carries was only reinforced in my mind (yes, I actually feel that the film has an even more valid underlying message after I read some of the ignorance posted regarding its alleged plot shortcomings). Consequently, I feel obliged to comment about the critics of the film as well.

Note, no, this film is neither a replica nor an attempt at replicating its 1951 predecessor. If you were hoping to see the same film with the same directing, same lines, same actors, and same popcorn, so you can relive your childhood memories, then I recommend dusting the old copy off your shelf and popping it in your video player. Alternately, if that fails, you may resort to hypnosis. This sort of close-mindedness that fossilizes on an original work and refuses anything new to be invented or said on the topic is exactly why our 21st century planet is operating based on ideas that were laid down by people in the Bronze Age…and the results are self-evident!

And while on the topic of critics, I wish to comment about Roger Ebert’s review for the Chicago Sun Times (see link via Yahoo’s Critics Reviews). Ebert spews out a boring, dull, rambling C-class article accusing the film of being just that. If you believe that Ebert’s article is nothing but a sleep-inducing assembly of words, then give The Day the Earth Stood Still a fair chance. Go see it!

I just got back from the opening midnight showing for The Day The World Stood Still in IMAX. When I first heard about this remake I had really high expectations in hoping that it would live up to some of the other memorable science fiction movies I’ve come to know and love. And while I hate being the bearer of bad news, it didn’t.

In fact, I got the impression that this film borrowed too many elements from other similar movies such as Independence Day, War Of The World’s, and just recently Clover Field. Without giving an entire review of the film (which I sure you’ll easily find in a different post) I’ll just point out where the story went wrong.

First, I’m getting a bit tired of the same old story about an emotionally broken family living with certain issues that seem so easy to solve if they could only learn to communicate better, but for some unknown reason they either dwell in the past or take their pain out on others just for the sake of trying to create some forced tear jerker. In this film, the chill/emotional factor was lacking no matter how hard they tried.

Second, my biggest problem with this film is when Klaatu meets another alien being like himself who’s been living on earth for over 70 years. This is a major turning point in the film yet their discussion is rather vague, contradicting, and rushed to judgement. I found it hard to believe that such an advanced alien race, with a greater understanding and knowledge of life, could want to exterminate the human race based on a 5 minute discussion.

Third, the military’s use of force did not seem to follow any guild lines that accurately portray’s that of the real world. I mean at the most inopportune times, they committed dumb acts such as shooting Klaatu before he even makes it off the space ship and attacked the main sphere shaped space craft with two tiny UAV’s for really no justifiable reason that late in the film.

Finally, the movies ending left me wanting more. I expected some type of moral to the story or a well though out speech/mutual understanding but it just ends almost abruptly leaving me a bit disappointed (note: there wasn’t any clapping that the end of this film). I’d have to say the special effects were amazing but it takes more than a giant robot made out of microscopic bug-like locust and sphere shaped transport modules to make a great science fiction film in my opinion. Overall, I’ll give it 2 1/2, maybe 3 out of 5 stars. But if your on a tight budget, I’d have to say save your money. You can wait for this one on video.
