The Number 23 (2007)
Whilst not perhaps a perfect example of the horror genre, Joel Schumacher’s flop, The Number 23, is just another in the line of predictable, albeit ridiculous horror films to come out in the last ten years. With Jim Carrey in the lead, who, in the past has been in some terrific pieces such as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Trueman Show, he never really comes to being in this film. Two out of five stars.
Friday the 13th (2009)
The original Friday the 13th was an absolute masterpiece, so it has always baffled why some directors take what isn’t broken, and then actually destroy it. With a huge budget and extensive post production team at the helm, the modern version feels too polished and ‘flawless’ to do any justice to the original, which had the gritty, B-movie feel that gave it a huge degree of atmosphere, and in the process, because just another teenager slasher film than anything worth remembering. Two out of five stars.
Alien vs. Predator (2004)
As perhaps the biggest Alien and Predator franchise fan I know, I was incredibly excited to see the two share a screen together in an epic show down. However, Paul W. S. Anderson manages to take away all the exhilaration that both these original characters give in their own films, resulting in quite a dreary and exhausting experience. One out of five stars.
The Ring Two (2005)
After the monumental success of The Ring, which has been touted as one of the most terrifying films of all time – with good reason, I must add – many come to see the sequel with high hopes; many were quite disappointed. The horrific and tense atmosphere of the original had been replaced with awkward, dull filler, and there was just nothing left to tide the audience over. Two out of five stars.
The Wicker Man (2006)
A remake of yet another classic horror film, the modern day version of The Wicker Man has developed a cult like following of its own. Described as having some of the poorest acting even witness, The Wicker Man is more known for its comedic values then for its horror, as actor Nicholas Cage bumbles through the lead almost deliberately. This is overacting at its finest, and if it weren’t that it was seriously intended to be a genuine horror film, would have made one of the best horror satire genre films I’ve ever seen. One out of five stars.
